The Abbey church of Saint-Sever
The abbey of Saint-Sever in Landes is a Benedictine abbey founded by the count of Gascony Guillaume Sanche at the end of the Xth century.
Its uncountable possessions extend from the XIth century from the Médoc to Pampelune in Spain. Grégoire de Montaner, who reigns over the abbey from 1028 till 1072, made of this site a powerful artistic home grouping together the most talented sculptors and the illuminators, among whom Stephanus Garsia, the author of the miniatures of Beatus.
The abbey church is classified as "Historic Monument" on November 18th, 1911.
The abbey church of Romanic style is strangely vast.
Its dimensions are impressive : 71 m of length, 31 m of wide for the nave and 41 m for the transept.
The main apse, dating from the 17th century, houses the canopied high altar with four marble columns, 18th century. Each gallery (north and south) of the abbey provides access to chapels and first floor rooms corresponding to the end apsidioles of the East end of the church. The organ was made in the 18th century by Dom Bedos.
The abbey church is decorated with a lively and magnificient forest of almost 150 capitals : 77 from the romanesque period, a very few Gothic, and the rest are modern. "Plants, bare leaves, people and animals, martyrdorm of John the Baptist, Daniel in the lions' den, Christ in majesty" are examples of works from different studios and various architectural periods.

Santiago de Compostela was the supreme goal for countless thousands of pious pilgrims who converged there from all over Europe throughout the Middle Ages.
